Winter nets 2016

netting-1466018

We have now had confirmation that winter nets will be held at Kind Edward VI college, Stourbridge and will commence on Thursday 11th February 2016 and will run through to 21st April. We will miss two weeks for half-term and Easter so will have 8 sessions for squad members to sharpen up for the next season. All sessions will be 7.00pm – 8.00pm. Charge £5.00 a session.

We had a good turnout this year so let’s try and replicate that next year, or even better it.

Thanks to Mike George for organising this again.

AGM 2015 – The Minutes

gavel and book

Here are the minutes from our 2015 AGM, lovingly put together by our sexy secretary Lee.

BEDOUINS AGM 2015

HELD 3rd NOVEMBER 2015 2000HRS

Chairman, Brian Susman

In attendance: Adrian Susman, Andy Hill, Richard Spratley, Austin Gregory, John Branch, Paul Lippitt, Lee Bywater, Neil Smith, Jon Stanier, Mike George, Tony Hancock.

BS opened the meeting thanking everyone for attending. BS could not recall a better attended Bedouins AGM.

APOLOGIES

Apologies received from Vernon Currie, John Howells, Jonathan Hill, Ross Morgan, Nick Slym, Nick Moxon.

  1. FIXTURES

Sundays

BS confirmed that there were potentially seven Sunday fixtures available to the club for next year.

PL, NS, RS and AG all raised concerns about that number due to their own club commitments.

BS, in agreement with those in attendance, suggested that Sunday fixtures we will look to play are as follows:

Alveley (a)

Kinlet (h)

Fossils (a)

Oldbury Old Boys (h)

SSP Halifax (a)

Wednesdays

JS suggested a home and away fixture against Oldswinford. All in attendance agreed that this would be a welcome addition to the fixtures list. BS will look into this once Enville’s pitch availability is confirmed.

BS suggested that Pedmore Over 40’s will be reviewed if contact is received from their representative. All agreed.

BS confirmed that Bedouins would like to continue to play a team from Enville. Due to Enville having a shortage of ‘Over 40’s’ players, it was agreed that Enville should simply field a suitable team of their choice.

  1. Treasurer’s Report

A copy of the Treasurer’s report was distributed. Club funds are currently healthy showing a surplus for the year of £224.54. Total balance at present is £2573.91

TH confirmed that subscriptions and match fees were up on previous years and that the nets sessions finished in profit.

This year there was a small fee for maintaining the club website. All in attendance agreed that this was well worth it considering the fantastic site that AS produces.

TH also requested that the provider of the Bedouins banking be changed. This would be to enable internet banking. LB suggested that if it made the treasurer’s job easier then he should have the support of the members. All agreed. TH/AS to arrange.

The Treasurer’s report will also be available at the Duck Supper.

  1. SUBSCRIPTIONS

BS suggested that, as the club was financially healthy, senior subscriptions should be maintained at the current rate of £40 per year. All in attendance agreed.

  1. OFFICERS

MG gave notice of his resignation as Vice Captain prior to the meeting. MG stated that this was due to ongoing injury issues and that he did not think it was fair to others for him to continue in office. BS thanked MG for his years of valued service. All in attendance echoed BS’s thanks and wished MG a speedy recovery in order that he may continue his playing career.

BS requested a volunteer to stand for Vice Captain.

LB stated that he would be happy to stand if the Club would have him. MG seconded and all others in attendance agreed. LB is new Vice Captain.

All other current Officers happy to continue in their roles.

  1. DUCK SUPPER

BS confirmed that the annual Duck Supper would take place on 27th November 2015, meeting at 1915hrs ready to sit at 2000hrs.

LB requested that all remaining Bedouins who had not already forwarded their menu choices and cheques should do so as soon as possible.

LB also requested clarification of the number of ladies attending the supper. LB will book a table for six.

LB also confirmed that after a slow start numbers for the Duck Supper are looking good this year but that final numbers and menus must be received soon. LB stated that he would forward a reminder e-mail with the date the choices need to be in by.

BS wished to clarify the arrangements for the ladies table. It was agreed by all that the highly valued ‘tea ladies’ would have their meals paid for by the club to say thank you for their hard work. The Club will request that any other lady ‘guests’ will be requested to pay for their meal. BS will send out an e-mail for clarity prior to the evening.

  1. NETS

BS asked if the club would like to continue with nets. All agreed that they should continue.

BS requested an update from MG in regards to the nets sessions.

MG stated that if the membership was happy he would contact King Edwards to check availability and try to book the same time slot as last year. All agreed

  1. NEXT AGM

The next Bedouins AGM will be held on Tuesday 1st November 2016.

  1. ANY OTHER BUSINESS

Club Shirts/Caps

AS suggested that, due to the number of new members in recent years, the club look to ordering a new stock of club shirts and also consider club caps.

JB asked AS what cap options were available as some may not wish to wear the ‘baseball’ style caps. AS stated that he would send out some information to the members and see which is most popular. The suggested charge would be £10 for a cap, although this may increase depending on the type of cap.

Shirts would be around £15.

Defibrillator

BS suggested that a defibrillator would be a welcome piece of equipment at the Enville ground. BS stated that in all likelihood it may never be used, but that in the event it was needed that it could be invaluable to someone’s life. BS stated that he thought it appropriate that the Bedouins approach Enville with regards to this and to offer some form of contribution.

All in attendance agreed that this was something worthwhile to pursue. BS will email David Thomas.

Cricket Balls

RS questioned the membership on the subject of cricket balls and their visibility. RS suggested it may be a good idea to try the pink high visibility cricket balls. The benefits of these balls were discussed at the meeting; all were in agreement that two balls should be purchased to test in low light matches.

JB will continue to supply the cricket balls via Enville.

Golf Day

BS confirmed that he had approached J Davidson about arranging the Bedouins Golf day 2016. All agreed that Sapey was the chosen venue. BS would e-mail J Davidson about arranging the golf day on a Thursday in late March.

Social Night

BS requested suggestions for 2016’s social night as he felt the dog racing evening was not now as well attended as in previous years.

Several options were discussed by the membership.

JB and MG suggested a skittles night. JB stated that this could be held at Enville as they had a skittle alley available for use.

NS stated that it may also be a good idea to make it a ‘Skittles and Curry’ night. NS recommended a local supplier for the curry and was happy to investigate this.

JB stated that he would check the club’s availability.

No other business raised, BS closed the meeting at 21.35hrs.

Hats!

old-naval-hatOne suggestion put forward at the AGM was that we should have new team hats. The question is, do we have Baseball Caps or Baggy Caps. The fairest thing seems to be to put it to the vote.

Take a look at the links to see which style you would prefer.

Bedouins AGM 2015

IMG_1201

Last night, in a darkened back room at the Fox Inn, Stourton, Bedouins CC had their AGM for 2015. It was thought to be a record turnout and there was much discussion about fixtures, finances, officers, and even hats, skittles and defibrillators.

There will be no change to the subscriptions and match fees for next season, the club is in a healthy state financially. The only change to officers is that Lee will take over from Georgie as Captain of Vice. All other officers remain the same.

Fixtures will be dealt with by Mr Chairman but it looks like there may be an additional Sunday game or two and pleased to report that we will still be making the trip north to Halifax next season.

There was late drama as recently married ex Captain of Vice, Mike George, succumbed to a nasty bout of cramp. Nasty for him, hilarious for the rest of the congregation. As Andy Hill pointed out, it must be the first time that any of our team has been injured in an AGM.

Full minutes of the meeting will follow soon.

Congratulations!

wedding-3-1500128

Great news! Congratulations are in order for Mike George who whisked Lynne away to the Lake District on September 3rd and finally made an honest woman of her. It was quite a small do apparently, in fact just the two of them. Lynne threw the bouquet, Mike dropped it.

I’m sure all the club would like to wish them both well, leave a comment below if you want. This left me wondering who the last Bedouin was to get hitched. Any ideas?

Bedouins v Pedmore Over 40s at Pedmore – Wednesday, 12 August 2015

Bedouins won by 7 wickets

Youth and experience combined to good effect at Pedmore to bring the Bedouins a resounding seven-wicket win in the last game of the 2015 season.  It was the two teenage opening bowlers and the two “experienced” (combined age of over 120) opening batsmen that set up the win, as the Beds rattled up 130 for 3, to win with a couple of overs to spare.

Owing to some non-availabilities – some for more painful reasons than others! – there were a couple of unfamiliar faces in the Bedouins line-up.  Ethan Jones, another of Austin’s mates (he has a secret production line somewhere), proved a very able opening bowler, belying his somewhat tender years.  And Harry Stanier, son of Jon, contributed some hefty blows to the Beds’ innings.

Unfortunately, our hosts seemed to have less idea of the importance of prompt arrival for an evening game beginning in mid-August.  So, while all Bedouins were changed and on parade by 5.45, the opposition arrived in dribs and drabs somewhat later, resulting in the toss having to be falsified in order to get the game underway while there was still some light around.

Therefore batting first, Pedmore made 127 for 6 in their 15 eight-ball overs, Ethan John taking 2 for 16 and Josh Lemm, opening the bowling at the other end, 1 for 21.  There was also a wicket apiece for Stanier senior and junior.

For the second time this season, John Howells and Jon Stanier formed a highly experienced opening pair.  Both were in fine form and both retired on 30.  The former, back on a favourite old stamping ground of his, showed the return of much of his old timing in hitting five boundaries, while Jon Stanier reached the boundary ropes six times.

Not to be outdone, Richard Ferguson and Richard Spratley also brought the crowd to its feet with a couple of classic cover drives.  With Harry Stanier hitting 29 not out, the Bedouins’ total of 130 for 3 was more than enough to see off a team of experienced cricketers.  Not bad for what some appear to consider “a small club”!

Pedmore Over 40s 127 for 6 (John 3 for 16; Lemm 1 for 21; J. Stanier 1 for 5; H. Stanier 1 for 29)

Bedouins 130 for 3 (Howells 30; J. Stanier 30; H. Stanier 29 not out; Gregory 13)

*  *  *  *

The Bedouins end their 2015 season in good shape.  A number of welcome new regulars have all shown good form.  Our finances seem pretty healthy.  Several new fixtures are in the offing for 2016.  And our “buffet belles” have continued to enable us to provide first-class hospitality.

It hasn’t been the most successful season from a win/lose perspective – a pretty even split between victories and defeats – but Bedouins have continued to play cricket the way they want to – “seriously for fun”.

Now we’d like a few more than the “regulars” turning up for the AGM, and a bumper turn-out for the Duck Supper.  AGM at the Fox at Stourton on Tuesday, November 3; Duck Supper at the Cat at Enville on Friday, November 27.  But you didn’t need reminding about those dates, did you?

Bedouins v SSP Halifax at Enville – Sunday, 9 August 2015

Bedouins lost by 14 runs

Our friends from up north, SSP, came down from Halifax for the 21st annual meeting with the Bedouins, at Enville, and returned up north with the Rasche Trophy safely gathered in for another year.  It was a highly competitive match, but played in the right friendly spirit and resulted in a total of over 400 runs, with slightly more than half of them going to SSP.

The Enville outfield was lightning quick, and anything that got past the fielder went for four.  Thus it was that SSP opener, Nathaniel Hyde, rattled up 52 retired, with 11 boundaries and one six meaning that he needed to run only two singles.  On the whole the Beds would have preferred Dr Jekyll to have turned up instead of Mr Hyde, because later he contributed eight accurate overs and was as athletic as one or two others among the SSP fielders.

The other SSP opener John Dobson, a regular thorn in the Beds’ side over the years, also hit 50, but in somewhat more sedate fashion.  His brother Tony also made 47 not out and later took three wickets.

The first SSP wicket fell in the 28th over with the score on 152. so the Bedouins bowlers did well in the later stages to restrict the total to 216 for 7 in 40 overs.  That was largely thanks to Jon Stanier, who had the excellent figures of 4 for 23 in six overs.  There were also two wickets for Spratters, and one for Adrian Susman.

In the Bedouins innings, the first six batsmen all made double figures, led by openers Paul Lippitt (53 not out, including nine boundaries), and Jon Stanier (53 retired, including 10 boundaries).  Adrian Susman made 16, Jono Hill 24, John Howells 18 and skipper-for-the-day Lee Bywater, who had brought his own fan club with him, 22.

At one stage, it looked as if the home side might make the 217 needed for an unlikely win, but the SSP front-line bowlers were just too strong and managed to rein in the scoring rate just when it really mattered.  The result was a 14-run defeat for the Beds, who had to content themselves with having put in an excellent all-round performance against a team that included some very capable cricketers.

The other highlight of the day was the Bedouettes’ catering.  They served up pre-match sandwiches etc, between-innings tea and cakes, and post-match goodies that together made up a memorable package.  Well done, thanks.  A gold star for each of you!

SSP Halifax 216 for 7 (Stanier 4 for 23; Spratley 2 for 33; Susman 1 for 43)

Bedouins 202 for 8 (Lippitt 53 not out; Stanier 53 retired; Hill 24; Bywater 22; Howells 18; Susman 16)
